PolyTracker is an open-source tool for performing data-flow and control-flow analysis of programs, with a focus on understanding how parsers and binary-processing code consume untrusted input. It instruments a program's source code to track how bytes from an input file propagate through the program's execution, producing a record of which parts of the code process which parts of the input. This data provenance information can be used to analyze parser behavior, identify dead or unreachable code paths, and understand how a program interprets complex or malformed file formats. Originally developed as part of what its authors refer to as The ALAN Parsers Project (Automated Lexical Annotation and Navigation of Parsers), PolyTracker has since become a general-purpose instrumentation and analysis tool applicable to reverse engineering, fuzzing target analysis, and file format research.
