NSS Labs Minion

Minion is a managed testing platform from NSS Labs that validates the effectiveness of security controls against large sets of malicious and benign test cases under controlled, repeatable conditions. The platform is positioned as distinct from penetration testing and red-teaming: rather than finding exploitable vulnerabilities or emulating adversary campaigns, it measures whether a given security control blocks, detects, allows, or misses a ground-truthed body of test samples at scale (tens to thousands of samples and permutations). Testing is delivered as a managed service by NSS Labs, so customers do not need to build or maintain an internal test lab. Results are versioned and repeatable, allowing organizations to re-run identical test conditions after a configuration or version change to measure whether protection improved or regressed (A/B effectiveness analytics). Minion also supports standardized, apples-to-apples comparison of multiple vendors or deployments under identical test criteria, intended to reduce vendor-biased proof-of-concepts and shorten evaluation cycles. Output includes efficacy metrics such as block rate, detection rate, miss rate, and false-positive rate, along with point-in-time validation reports intended to serve as audit-defensible evidence for GRC, risk, and legal stakeholders.
