Buttercup is an open-source, fully automated AI Cyber Reasoning System that discovers and patches vulnerabilities in open-source software without human intervention. It was built by Trail of Bits for DARPA's AI Cyber Challenge (AIxCC), where it placed second, and has since been released as open source for the security community to use and extend. The system combines static analysis with AI-guided fuzzing to identify reachable vulnerabilities in target codebases. Each candidate bug is reproduced and validated before being reported, and fixes are generated using LLMs and verified to confirm they close the vulnerability without breaking the build. A multi-agent architecture coordinates the full pipeline from discovery to validated patch with no human in the loop. Buttercup is designed to be scalable, running on anything from a single laptop to enterprise Kubernetes clusters, and supports vulnerability discovery and patching across multiple programming languages and 20 CWE categories. During the AIxCC finals, Buttercup found 28 vulnerabilities, deployed 19 patches, and achieved 90% patch accuracy at a cost of $181 per point scored, using exclusively non-reasoning LLMs.
