AV-TEST is an independent IT security research institute headquartered in Magdeburg, Germany, established in 2004. The institute specializes in testing, certifying, and benchmarking IT security products for both consumer and corporate users across multiple platforms including Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. The institute operates one of the largest malware databases in the world, supported by over 200 servers with more than 2,500 terabytes of storage capacity. Its automated detection systems evaluate more than 3 million potentially malicious files, websites, and emails daily. AV-TEST conducts thousands of individual and comparative tests per year across dedicated laboratories, including specialized test labs for Windows/macOS, Android, and IoT devices, with over 200 workstations in total. Security products are assessed across standardized modules covering protection effectiveness, system performance impact, and usability (false alarm rates). Successful products receive internationally recognized certifications: "AV-TEST Certified" for home users and "AV-TEST Approved" for corporate users. The institute also tests IoT and smart home devices, awarding a separate IoT certification to qualifying products. Beyond antivirus and endpoint solutions, AV-TEST evaluates a broader range of security products including VPN solutions, parental control software, DNS protection, network detection and response (NDR), and zero-trust solutions. The institute also offers a threat intelligence platform called AV-ATLAS. AV-TEST maintains relationships with organizations such as the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and publishes test results in four languages, attracting approximately 500,000 monthly visitors.
