RedWolf Test Target is a pre-configured virtual machine designed to function as a victim or target system for security testing and attack simulation. The VM can be deployed in VMWare, OpenStack, or VMware Player environments to provide a controlled testing environment. The test target includes multiple pre-configured services including DNS, SMTP, HTTP, and HTTPS servers. The DNS server contains pre-defined DNS definitions, the SMTP server operates as a black-hole that silently absorbs all sent mail, and web services include built-in websites with special testing URLs designed to trigger responses from DDoS devices, WAFs, IPS systems, antivirus, malware detection, and data leak prevention systems. The VM sends real-time telemetry to the RedWolf control system, enabling side-by-side comparison of attacker and victim statistics. This visibility allows security teams to characterize the behavior of intermediate security systems and identify when upstream systems block attacks. Deployment options include positioning test targets at various network levels - after routers to verify upstream connectivity and CDN/Cloud DDoS/WAF blocking, behind DDoS appliances for device characterization, or at multiple network layers for comprehensive root-cause analysis. Multiple test targets can be deployed at different network levels to enable faster troubleshooting and provide insight into how each security layer responds to attacks.
