OpenRefactory Intelligent Code Repair (iCR) is a static analysis and automated code remediation tool that detects and automatically fixes security and reliability bugs in source code. Unlike traditional security tools that only detect vulnerabilities, iCR generates patches (called "fixers") that developers can either adopt automatically or review before applying. iCR offers two categories of fixers: - Reliability and Security Fixers: Target specific security and reliability issues per language, aligned with OWASP and SANS top vulnerability lists. - Compliance Fixers: Target violations of coding standards such as MISRA C (superset of ISO 26262) and CERT's Android Secure Coding Standard. iCR for C includes: - 42 safety and security fixers covering buffer overflow, integer arithmetic, integer signedness and widthness, memory leak, memory corruption, and basic concurrency bug scenarios. - 20 compliance fixers addressing approximately 70% of the most critical MISRA C coding standard rules. iCR for Java (in development at time of publication) targets resource leaks and Android-specific issues such as preventing sensitive data broadcast via implicit intents. Primary target industries include automotive (ISO 26262 / MISRA compliance), medical devices, embedded systems, IoT, and kernel/device driver development. The tool aims to reduce time spent on manual bug remediation — which averages four hours per bug — and to lower the cost of fixing defects by enabling earlier detection and resolution within the software development lifecycle.
