VitalSigns for IP (VIP) is a network monitoring tool designed for IBM z/OS mainframe environments. It monitors the z/OS Communications Server and the mainframe IP network, providing real-time visibility into network health and traffic through a browser-based interface. VIP monitors multiple components including the IP network, Enterprise Extender, OSA (Open Systems Adapter), and FTP. It generates network history reports and verifies service-level agreements (SLAs). The tool includes a browser-based IP Packet Trace feature that executes traces on z/OS systems via batch jobs. Real-time graphical displays of TCP/IP network health and traffic are accessible from a standard desktop browser without requiring a dedicated client installation. VIP delivers performance data and alerts in real-time, enabling help desk staff and network administrators to detect, diagnose, and resolve mainframe TCP/IP issues. It is designed for low CPU overhead to minimize resource consumption on the mainframe. When network issues are detected, VIP can trigger automatic remediation by sending alerts to its companion product, VitalSigns for Network Automation and Control (VNAC), enabling automated response workflows. Installation is designed to be straightforward, with an Agent and Server typically deployable within approximately one hour. The product positions itself as a lower-cost alternative to top-tier mainframe network monitoring competitors.
