Easy Rules Creator (ERC) is a tool designed for security professionals to create, edit, and validate Snort-based IDS/IPS rules. It provides a step-by-step interface that simplifies the rule authoring process by allowing users to select Snort keyword options from drop-down menus and checkboxes, with rules being constructed in real-time as selections are made. The tool addresses common challenges in rule writing such as syntax errors, formatting mistakes, and the time-consuming nature of manual rule creation. It includes a built-in regular expression (Regex) tester that allows users to validate and test regex patterns before saving results back to a rule. ERC also performs rule validation checks to identify common formatting and syntax errors prior to deployment in production environments, helping to reduce performance issues and minimise false positives. The tool is positioned as a companion to IDappcom's Traffic IQ assessment platform, which provides a library of over 21,000 exploit files and associated rule updates (with approximately 200 new rules added monthly). ERC is intended for situations where users need to author custom rules or modify existing ones beyond what the pre-built library offers.
