digitronic SmartToken is a smartphone application that provides virtual security tokens for two-factor authentication (2FA) to operating systems and specialist applications, replacing physical hardware tokens such as smart cards or USB sticks. The app is installed on a smartphone, which acts as the first authentication factor. The second factor is either a PIN entered directly on the mobile device or a biometric feature (e.g., fingerprint or face recognition) via the smartphone. The smartphone functions as a Class 2 reader in this process. Multiple virtual security tokens can be stored and managed within the app, each configurable with individual authentication methods. This makes it suitable for administrators and users who work across frequently changing workstations. The app includes an autocoupling function that enables faster connection setup with frequently used or preferred devices. It also supports automatic locking or log-off when the smartphone is removed from the PC's proximity, protecting against unauthorized access. SmartToken is designed to work in conjunction with digitronic's SmartLogon™ 2-factor authentication solution. It targets organizations with home office setups or environments with frequently changing workstations, eliminating the need for additional hardware tokens.
