What is Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP)?
Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP) is a security product installed on user endpoints, such as laptops and desktops, to prevent malware, ransomware, and other threats before they execute. It combines antivirus, next-generation antivirus, anti-malware, application control, and host firewall capabilities into a single agent.
What it does
An EPP sits on each endpoint and blocks threats at the point of entry. Core functions include:
- Scanning files and processes against known malware signatures
- Using behavioral analysis and machine learning to catch threats without prior signatures
- Enforcing application allowlists or blocklists so only approved software can run
- Blocking ransomware by detecting and stopping bulk file encryption
- Providing a host-based firewall to control inbound and outbound traffic
- Reporting device health and threat events to a central management console
Some EPP products also perform cloud-based scanning to offload processing from the endpoint itself.
Why teams buy it
Endpoints are the most common entry point for attackers. Phishing emails deliver malicious attachments, drive-by downloads install droppers, and removable media carries infected files. An EPP stops most of these threats before they reach the operating system or user data.
Regulatory frameworks such as PCI DSS, HIPAA, and ISO 27001 require documented malware protection on endpoints. An EPP satisfies that requirement and produces logs that auditors can review.
EPP is the prevention layer in endpoint security. It pairs with Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), which handles investigation and remediation after a threat gets through. Many vendors sell both as a combined platform.
What to look for
- Detection coverage: Test detection rates against independent benchmarks, not vendor-supplied numbers.
- Performance impact: A heavy agent slows user machines. Ask for CPU and memory benchmarks on your hardware.
- Application control: Allowlisting enforces a deny-by-default posture and stops unknown executables outright.
