What is Mobile Threat Defense (MTD)?
Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) is a category of security software that detects and blocks threats targeting iOS, Android, and ChromeOS devices. It protects against malware, malicious network connections, phishing via SMS and messaging apps, and operating system exploits on mobile endpoints.
What it does
MTD software runs on mobile devices or integrates with a mobile management platform to identify threats that traditional endpoint tools miss. Core functions include:
- Scanning apps for malware, spyware, and risky behaviors before and after installation
- Detecting rogue Wi-Fi networks, SSL stripping, and man-in-the-middle attacks
- Identifying OS-level exploits, jailbreaks, and root attempts in real time
- Blocking phishing links delivered through SMS, QR codes, email, and messaging apps
- Reporting device risk posture to Mobile Device Management (MDM) or Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) platforms so that conditional access policies can act on the data
Some products run entirely on the device, which means detection works without sending data to a cloud backend. Others use cloud-based scanning or a combination of both.
Why teams buy it
Mobile devices connect to corporate email, SaaS apps, and internal systems, but they sit outside the perimeter that Endpoint Protection Platform (EPP) and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) tools cover. Attackers exploit this gap with SMS phishing (smishing), malicious apps distributed outside official stores, and network-level attacks on public Wi-Fi. Regulated industries, including U.S. federal agencies, often require MTD as part of a zero-trust or FISMA compliance program.
What to look for
- OS coverage: Confirm support for iOS, Android, and ChromeOS if your fleet includes all three
- On-device vs. cloud detection: On-device models protect privacy and work offline; cloud models may offer faster signature updates
- MDM/UEM integration: The platform should feed risk scores to your existing MDM so you can quarantine non-compliant devices automatically
