What is SD-WAN (SD-WAN)?
SD-WAN (SD-WAN) is a software-defined approach to managing wide area networks that steers traffic across multiple links, such as broadband, MPLS, or LTE, based on policy rather than static routing. It separates the network control plane from the underlying hardware so administrators can set rules centrally and let the network apply them automatically.
What it is
SD-WAN stands for Software-Defined Wide Area Network. It is a networking architecture, not a product category on its own. The core idea is that a central controller, rather than individual router configurations, decides how packets travel between sites and users.
Key mechanics include:
- Link aggregation and failover. SD-WAN bonds multiple internet connections and shifts traffic when one link degrades.
- Application-aware routing. The controller identifies traffic by application type and sends it down the best available path. Video calls may go over a low-latency link; bulk backups over a cheaper one.
- Policy enforcement. Administrators write rules once. The controller pushes them to every edge device across all locations.
- Encrypted tunnels. Traffic between sites travels inside encrypted overlays, replacing or supplementing traditional MPLS circuits.
Why it matters
Branch offices and remote workers need reliable, fast connections to cloud applications and data centers. Traditional WAN designs route all traffic through a central hub, which adds latency and creates a single point of failure. SD-WAN lets each site connect directly to the internet or cloud while still following corporate policy. This reduces circuit costs and improves application performance without requiring manual changes at every router.
How tools address it
SD-WAN capabilities appear most often inside Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) platforms. SASE vendors combine SD-WAN transport with security functions such as Secure Web Gateway (SWG), Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), and firewall-as-a-service in a single cloud-delivered service.
