Passbolt

Passbolt is an open source password manager designed for agile and devops teams. The platform enables organizations to centralize, organize and share credentials securely through a collaborative application. The company offers flexible deployment options including on-premises installation, secure cloud hosting, and cloud-native deployment.

The platform uses end-to-end encryption with a security architecture that isolates encryption libraries from the server through a mandatory browser extension. Users have unique and randomly generated encryption keys stored securely in the browser extension. The solution supports features including mobile applications, browser integration, password generation, account recovery, SSO integration, and multi-factor authentication.

Passbolt SA is based in Luxembourg and positions itself as a European privacy-centric solution. The company was founded after originating as an internal tool in a digital agency in 2011, with the first stable open source release in 2016.

The founding team established commercial operations in 2017 and has since grown to approximately 30 employees. The company has raised funding including a 3M EUR round in 2020 and an 8M USD round in 2024, and serves approximately 2000 customers including governments and defense agencies.

The platform is built with CakePHP for the backend API and React for the frontend, with the entire source code publicly audited. The company maintains both open source community editions and commercial Pro subscriptions for organizations requiring additional features and support.
