Coder

Coder is a software company that develops an open-source platform for provisioning and managing cloud development environments (CDEs). The platform allows engineering teams to create, standardize, and manage remote developer workspaces hosted on cloud infrastructure or on-premises hardware, rather than relying on individual local machines.

The core product enables platform engineering teams to define workspace templates using Terraform, which developers can then use to spin up consistent, reproducible environments in minutes. These environments support a wide range of IDEs, tools, and custom configurations.

Key operational features include automated idle-environment shutdowns, workspace scheduling, and bin-packing of multiple workspaces onto single VMs to reduce cloud computing costs.

Coder is self-hosted, meaning organizations retain full control over where their code and data reside — deployable on any major cloud provider or in air-gapped, on-premises environments. This model is positioned to address security and compliance requirements, as sensitive source code never leaves the organization's controlled infrastructure, reducing the risk of data exfiltration.

The platform also supports GPU-enabled environments for AI and machine learning workloads, and includes centralized distribution of generative AI developer tools such as GitHub Copilot. Coder integrates with internal developer platforms such as Backstage and supports ecosystem tools like JFrog.

Target customers span financial services, government, automotive, entertainment, retail, and high-tech sectors. Notable customers include Dropbox and Skydio. Coder 2.0, released in September 2023, introduced a plug-in registry and expanded integration capabilities.
