Package firewall that blocks malicious and vulnerable open-source packages before install

Listed November 2026.

## What is Varnish Artifact Firewall?

Varnish Artifact Firewall is an in-path policy enforcement layer for open-source packages. It sits in front of package registries and repository managers and evaluates every package and version at the moment it is requested, then allows, hides or denies it before it is served. Risky packages never reach developers, CI/CD pipelines or AI coding agents.

Key capabilities:
- Allow, hide or deny packages matched by PURL or coordinates, including default-deny allowlisting scoped to packages or versions
- Rule engine with PURL, version range, glob and priority-based matching; direct binary fetches are preflight-checked
- OSV.dev import to block known-vulnerable versions (CVEs and other advisories), with severity thresholds mapped to actions and an hourly refresh
- Quarantine window that holds newly published versions for a configurable period, to counter maintainer account takeover and malicious uploads
- Namespace isolation that blocks public-registry access for protected internal scopes, preventing dependency confusion
- Policy as declarative YAML on disk or in a Git repository, reloaded without service interruption
- Report, hide and full enforcement modes, with an audit log of which rule fired and why
- Denied requests return a 403 Forbidden response that states the policy reason

Artifact Firewall is vendor-neutral, needs nothing installed on developer machines and works alongside Varnish Virtual Registry. It is built for security, platform engineering, DevOps and compliance teams.
