## What is Hanko?

Hanko is an open-source authentication platform that handles user onboarding and login flows for web applications. It is GDPR-compliant and hosted in Europe, offering a self-hosted option or a managed cloud service (Hanko Cloud) with no vendor lock-in.

Hanko supports a range of authentication methods that can be configured and combined based on application requirements:
- Passkeys (WebAuthn-based, passwordless)
- Passwords (optional, user-configurable)
- Passcodes (one-time codes via email)
- OAuth / Social login
- Two-factor authentication (2FA)

The platform provides pre-built UI components called Hanko Elements, which are framework-agnostic Web Components. These components cover login, user onboarding, and account management, and can be embedded directly into web applications without redirecting users. They support custom CSS for branding alignment.

A JavaScript SDK is available (Hanko v2) for building custom login experiences. Hanko Elements work across any web technology stack due to their reliance on standard Web Components.

- Hanko Cloud (managed SaaS)
