## Executive summary

As of November 2026, CybersecTools tracks 405 companies that sell IAM solutions as their main business. MFA & Passwordless is part of that family. The largest groups are based in the United States, Canada and Israel. In the last 12 months they raised $4.3B across 60 funding rounds, 24 companies were acquired and 34 new companies started in the last two years.

From that field we chose seven products that stop password theft and phishing in different ways. Okta Adaptive MFA comes first, for teams on Okta that want FastPass, FIDO2 and device checks under one policy set. Cisco Duo Passwordless comes second, for hybrid estates that want a staged path from MFA to passwordless, with proxies for on-premises services. Beyond Identity Phishing-Resistant MFA is third, for teams that want device-bound passkeys and posture checks that cover unmanaged and BYOD devices.

The rest fill specific gaps. HYPR Authenticate adds FIDO passkeys and a desktop MFA client, and Silverfort Universal MFA reaches Kerberos, NTLM and OT. OneLogin SmartFactor scores each login for risk. JumpCloud MFA fits teams already on the JumpCloud directory.

So the choice comes down to reach. A passkey only protects systems that can ask for it. Decide first whether your gap is the factor itself, or the legacy paths that skip your identity provider.

## How we evaluated

We looked at 146 MFA & passwordless solutions from 123 companies, and the 7 on this page made the cut. We combined our judgment from years of leading enterprise security programs with market data from [Mandos](https://mandos.io/data/companies?utm_source=cybersectools.com&utm_medium=shortlist), our market intelligence platform, and with the vendor and review pages listed under Sources at the end of this page. For customer feedback, we left out paid reviews, reviews by vendor staff or partners, review campaigns and anything older than two years, so you get an accurate view of what customers say.

We weighted support for phishing-resistant methods such as FIDO2 WebAuthn, passkeys and smart cards. We also weighed the depth of adaptive signals like device posture and IP reputation, reach into legacy protocols and on-premises services, and behaviour when the cloud is unreachable. We left out consumer authenticator apps and password managers that add a second factor but give an organisation no central policy or enforcement.

## What is MFA & Passwordless

MFA and passwordless solutions prove a user is who they claim to be with more than a reusable secret. Methods range from push prompts and one-time codes to FIDO2 WebAuthn passkeys, smart cards and hardware keys. Keys and passkeys are bound to the site's origin, so they defeat adversary-in-the-middle phishing kits that relay codes. Adaptive engines add context: device posture, location, IP reputation and behaviour decide when to ask for a factor and which one to ask for.

For you, this is the control that turns a stolen password from a breach into a failed login. It sits on top of your directory and identity provider, depends on clean user and device inventories, and feeds your SSO, VPN, PAM and zero trust access policies. Your detection team relies on it too, because authentication logs are an early signal for MFA fatigue, session hijacking and lateral movement.

## How they fit your cybersecurity program (NIST CSF)

NIST CSF 2.0 has six functions: Govern, Identify, Protect, Detect, Respond and Recover. The grid shows which functions each pick maps to in our record, so you can see where a solution sits in your program and what it leaves to other controls.

All 7 solutions map to Protect. 3 of 7 map to Detect. None map to Govern, Identify, Respond or Recover.

| Solution | Govern | Identify | Protect | Detect | Respond | Recover |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| All solutions on this list | 0 of 7 | 0 of 7 | 7 of 7 | 3 of 7 | 0 of 7 | 0 of 7 |
| Okta Adaptive MFA | – | – | 1 of 5 (Identity Management, Authentication, and Access Control) | 1 of 2 (Continuous Monitoring) | – | – |
| Cisco Duo Passwordless | – | – | 1 of 5 (Identity Management, Authentication, and Access Control) | – | – | – |

| JumpCloud Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) | – | – | 1 of 5 (Identity Management, Authentication, and Access Control) | – | – | – |

Each cell shows how many of the function's NIST CSF 2.0 categories the solution maps to, with the category names.

A product helps you reach these outcomes, but it does not make you compliant on its own. Your people and processes do the rest.

## CISO checklist for selecting a MFA & Passwordless product

Work through these steps in order, from scoping your authentication gaps to the commercial checks before you sign.

1. **Map every authentication path: SaaS, VPN, RDP, SSH, Kerberos, NTLM, LDAP and OT.** MFA on your identity provider does nothing for paths that never touch it, and those are the paths attackers use for lateral movement.
2. **List the users who need phishing-resistant factors first.** Admins, finance approvers and help desk staff are the main phishing targets, and this list decides whether you need FIDO2, PIV or passkeys.
3. **Confirm FIDO2 WebAuthn, passkey and smart card support for those groups.** OTP and push can be relayed by reverse-proxy phishing kits, while origin-bound credentials cannot.
4. **Ask how the solution resists MFA fatigue and session token theft.** Attackers who cannot steal the factor go after the push prompt or the session cookie instead.
5. **Check which device posture sources the policy engine reads, and whether it re-checks after login.** Posture checked only at login misses a device that becomes compromised mid-session.
6. **Confirm how logins behave when the vendor's cloud is unreachable.** Without failover or tested break-glass accounts, a provider outage becomes your outage.
7. **Run a pilot on your hardest systems first: a legacy app, admin access and one OT or command-line path.** Easy SaaS integrations prove little, and the legacy paths are where rollouts stall.
8. **Review enrollment, lost-device and account recovery flows with your help desk.** Social engineering of the help desk to reset MFA is a common way around strong factors, so recovery must not be the weak link.
9. **Confirm authentication logs export to your SIEM with the fields your detections need.** Your SOC needs risk scores, factor type and device context to spot push-bombing and impossible travel.
10. **Count users, authenticators and licence basis before pricing.** Per-user and per-resource costs grow differently, and enrollment effort adds up across remote staff.
11. **Agree on a rollout plan, support ownership and an exit path with the vendor.** Authentication sits in front of everything, so you need clear escalation during rollout and a way to move enrolled users off the solution if you switch later.

## Conclusion

On this list, Okta Adaptive MFA or Cisco Duo Passwordless is the default choice if you need one adaptive engine for workforce SaaS. Okta suits teams already on Okta, and Duo suits mixed hybrid estates. Beyond Identity Phishing-Resistant MFA and HYPR Authenticate suit teams that want passkeys tied to the device.

Silverfort Universal MFA closes the Kerberos, NTLM and OT gaps the others leave open. OneLogin SmartFactor Authentication and JumpCloud MFA suit teams already on those platforms. Start by mapping every authentication path you have, because the right product reaches the paths your attackers would use.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between MFA and passwordless authentication?

MFA adds a second factor on top of a password. Passwordless removes the password and relies on a possession factor, usually a FIDO2 key or passkey unlocked by a biometric or PIN. Passwordless built on FIDO2 is also phishing-resistant, which password plus OTP is not.

### Is SMS or push MFA still acceptable in 2026?

For low-risk users it beats a password alone, but neither stops adversary-in-the-middle relays, and push is open to MFA fatigue attacks. Admins, finance approvers and help desk staff should be on FIDO2 keys, passkeys or PIV smart cards. Treat SMS as a fallback to phase out.

### Do I need security keys if my identity provider supports passkeys?

Passkeys on phones and laptops are a large step up and work well for most staff. Some products also support FIDO2 security keys for your highest-risk accounts, because the credential stays on the device. Most organisations end up with a mix, matched to risk.

### How do I get MFA onto RDP, SSH and legacy Kerberos or NTLM apps?

Your cloud identity provider usually cannot see those flows. You need either authentication proxies that front on-premises services or an enforcement layer on Active Directory protocols, such as Silverfort Universal MFA. Map those paths first, since they are the ones attackers use to move laterally.

### What happens to logins if a cloud MFA provider goes down?

Anything that depends on that provider stops authenticating unless you have planned for it. Keep tested break-glass accounts and a written outage runbook. If downtime is unacceptable, look at products that deploy on-premises or in a hybrid setup, such as Silverfort Universal MFA or Cisco Duo Passwordless.

### Which solution on this list can handle customer login as well as staff?

HYPR Authenticate lists an SDK for adding passkeys to your own mobile and web apps, and Beyond Identity lists CIAM integrations and SDKs. The others are aimed at workforce access. Be careful with SMS and email fallbacks in customer flows, because attackers will go for the weakest method you allow.
