## Executive summary

As of November 2026, CybersecTools tracks 252 companies that sell data protection solutions as their main business. The largest groups are based in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. In the last 12 months they raised $1.8B across 28 funding rounds, 9 companies were acquired and 12 new companies started in the last two years.

This list covers solutions that find and protect sensitive data: data loss prevention (DLP) and data security posture management (DSPM). For encryption keys, databases or email-only DLP, see our [Key Management](https://cybersectools.com/shortlists/best-key-management-solutions), [Database Security](https://cybersectools.com/shortlists/best-database-security-solutions) and [Email DLP](https://cybersectools.com/shortlists/best-email-dlp-solutions) shortlists.

From that field we chose seven solutions. Microsoft Purview suits teams that run on Microsoft 365 and want labels and DLP they may already own. Palo Alto Networks Enterprise Data Loss Prevention fits teams that already run Palo Alto firewalls or Prisma Access, because one policy then covers network, cloud, endpoint and AI app traffic. Cyera fits teams that first need to find where sensitive data sits across cloud, SaaS and on-premises stores.

The main choice is where you want control. DLP products watch data as it moves and stop it from leaving. DSPM products such as Cyera and Varonis find where sensitive data sits and who can reach it. Ask how much tuning each product needs, because every reviewed product here needs policy work to cut false alarms.

## How we evaluated

We looked at 557 data protection solutions from 319 companies, and the 7 on this page made the cut. We combined our judgment from years of leading enterprise security programs with market data from [Mandos](https://mandos.io/data/companies?utm_source=cybersectools.com&utm_medium=shortlist), our market intelligence platform, and with the vendor and review pages listed under Sources at the end of this page. For customer feedback, we left out paid reviews, reviews by vendor staff or partners, review campaigns and anything older than two years, so you get an accurate view of what customers say.

Four traits mattered most: accurate detection of sensitive data with few false alarms; coverage across email, web, cloud apps and endpoints; visibility into where data sits and who can reach it; and links to the SIEM and ticketing systems your team uses. We left out backup, file transfer, encryption, database and single-cloud products, which have their own lists or do a different job. The order follows how widely each product is used by teams like yours. Company momentum shows how the vendor itself is growing, so a market leader can rank first with a lower score.

## What is Data Protection

Data protection products find, label and guard your sensitive data, such as customer records, card numbers, health data and source code. Data loss prevention (DLP) watches email, web uploads, cloud apps and endpoints, then blocks or warns when sensitive data is about to leave. Data security posture management (DSPM) scans your storage to show where sensitive data sits and who can open it. Many products now do both.

For you, this matters because most data leaks are mistakes, such as a file sent to the wrong person or shared too widely. Others are staff taking data when they leave. Fines and lost trust follow both. Data protection helps you see your sensitive data and stop it before it leaves.

### 1. Microsoft Purview Data Security

**[Microsoft](https://mandos.io/data/companies/microsoft?utm_source=cybersectools.com&utm_medium=shortlist-md&utm_campaign=explore-in-mandos)**. Data classification and protection solution for Microsoft environments

Redmond, United States · Founded 1975 · Public company · Momentum 59/100 (Mandos)

Certifications: SOC 2, ISO 27001, FedRAMP, PCI DSS, HIPAA

**Best for:** Teams that run on Microsoft 365

Product page: https://cybersectools.com/tools/microsoft-purview-information-protection

#### At a glance

- Vendor: Microsoft
- Headquarters: Redmond, United States
- Founded: 1975
- Ownership: Public company (MSFT)
- Deployment: Hybrid
- Company size: SMB, Mid-Market, Enterprise
- NIST CSF: Identify, Protect, Detect
- Pricing: Contact sales

#### Our take

Microsoft Purview Data Security, formerly Azure Information Protection, finds and labels sensitive data across file shares, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, Teams, endpoints and some non-Microsoft cloud apps. It uses trainable classifiers, exact data match and hundreds of built-in sensitive information types. Sensitivity labels apply protection inside Microsoft 365 apps, including Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Activity Explorer and Content Explorer show where labeled data goes.

It earns its place because the labels sit inside the apps your staff already use, and it is built into Microsoft 365, so you may already own part of it. That makes it a natural first layer for a Microsoft estate of any size. Weigh that labels only protect what gets labeled, so plan who sets the classification rules and how you will check them.

#### Microsoft Purview Data Security main features

- Data discovery across on-premises file shares, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, Microsoft Teams, and endpoints
- AI-powered trainable classifiers for automatic data classification
- Hundreds of pre-built sensitive information types
- Sensitivity labeling for documents and emails
- Activity Explorer for monitoring user activities with sensitive data
- Content Explorer for viewing documents with sensitive information
- Unified administration portal for policy management and analytics
- Exact data match capabilities

#### Microsoft Purview Data Security main integrations

Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, Microsoft Teams, Azure, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Box, Dropbox, Google Workspace, Salesforce, Cisco Webex, Amazon Web Services (AWS), ServiceNow, ChatGPT Enterprise, Claude, Google Gemini, DeepSeek, Amazon S3, Amazon RDS

#### What customers say

Sentiment: 30% positive · 53% mixed · 17% negative (from first-hand public reviews and comments, 2024 to 2026).
Most praised: Integrations.
Most criticized: Missing features, Interface.

Purview Information Protection works best for teams already on Microsoft 365, because sensitivity labels can apply on their own once a policy is set and then control who can open, edit or share a file. The catch is data loss prevention, since false positives run high until the policies are trained, and coverage thins out once data sits outside Microsoft, for example when you need to find sensitive data across other clouds.

#### Before you buy

Where it is strong:

- Sensitivity labels built into Microsoft 365 apps
- Hundreds of built-in sensitive information types
- May come with licenses you already hold

Ask in the demo:

- Check which features your Microsoft 365 license includes
- Test classification accuracy on your own documents
- Ask how it covers data outside Microsoft 365

It connects to Microsoft Purview labels, Exchange Online, Gmail, Slack, Box, Salesforce, ServiceNow and GitHub.

It earns its place because one policy follows data across network, SaaS, endpoint and AI apps, so you do not write the same rule in several consoles. It enforces through Prisma Access, Prisma Browser and Palo Alto firewalls, which makes it the natural pick if you already run them. If you do not, weigh the platform you would need to adopt to get it.

#### Palo Alto Networks Enterprise Data Loss Prevention main features

- Exact Data Matching

#### Our take

Varonis DSPM finds and classifies sensitive data across file storage, SaaS apps, email, cloud infrastructure and databases. Its access graph shows who can reach each file through entitlements, groups, sharing links and nested permissions. It can remove excessive access automatically, detects threats in real time and offers a 24x7 managed detection and response service. It connects to Microsoft Purview, Google Workspace, Box, AWS, Azure, Databricks, Snowflake and Okta.

It earns its place on the access side of data security, since the graph answers who can reach a file, not only where the file sits. It runs in a hybrid model from SMB to enterprise, which suits estates with large on-premises file stores. Proofpoint has agreed to buy Varonis, so ask how licensing and the roadmap will change once the deal closes.

#### Varonis DSPM main features

Each cell shows how many of the function's NIST CSF 2.0 categories the solution maps to, with the category names.

A product helps you reach these outcomes, but it does not make you compliant on its own. Your people and processes do the rest.

## CISO checklist for selecting a Data Protection product

Work through these steps in order to go from unknown data risk to a contract you can defend.

1. **List the sensitive data types you must protect.** Detection rules start from what you care about most.
2. **Map where that data lives and how it leaves.** Each product covers a different mix of channels.
3. **Decide whether you need DLP, DSPM or both.** One stops data moving, the other shows where it sits.
4. **Test detection on your own documents.** Accuracy on real data is the best test of a product.
5. **Run new policies in monitor mode first.** Blocking too early stops real work and annoys staff.
6. **Count false alarms during the trial.** Noisy alerts cost your team time every day.
7. **Check coverage for AI apps and copy and paste.** These are common new ways for data to leak.
8. **Check where alerts go.** Alerts in your SIEM or ticketing system get handled faster.
9. **Ask how pricing scales.** Prices often grow with users, channels or data scanned.
10. **Ask for references from companies like yours.** Tuning effort differs a lot by industry and size.

## Conclusion

Start with your biggest gap. If you do not know where your sensitive data sits, start with Cyera or Varonis, which map data and access across your stores. If your work runs on Microsoft 365, Microsoft Purview may already be in your license.

If you need to stop data leaving across every channel, Broadcom Symantec Data Loss Prevention and Forcepoint DLP are long-time standards with deep detection. Netskope and Palo Alto fit teams that already run their cloud or network security platforms.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between DLP and DSPM?

DLP watches data as it moves and stops it from leaving. DSPM scans where data sits and shows who can reach it. Many companies need both, and several products here cover both.

### Do I need DLP if I use Microsoft 365?

Microsoft Purview covers a lot inside Microsoft 365 and may come with your license. If you need deeper detection, other channels or fewer false alarms, a dedicated product may fit better.

### Why do DLP products raise so many false alarms?

Simple rules match anything that looks like a card number or ID. Good products use exact data matching, fingerprints and machine learning to cut noise. Every product still needs tuning for your data.

### Can data protection stop staff from leaking data to AI apps?

Several products here watch uploads to AI apps and can block or coach users. Check how each one detects AI apps and what it does when sensitive data is pasted.

### How long does a data protection rollout take?

A basic rollout can take weeks, and tuning often takes months. Start in monitor mode, learn what normal looks like, then switch on blocking.

### Why do some products have no customer section?

We only summarize customer views when we find enough first-hand reviews from more than one place. If a product has too few public reviews, ask that vendor for references.
